The RYA Level 2 certificate is the standard generally accepted by insurance companies and boat hire firms and can be converted to an International Certificate of Competence for use abroad. It provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in small powerboats, focusing on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.
This is a two-day course and takes place at the Coquet Shorebase on The Braid, Amble, using the Coquet Estuary and the sea out to Coquet Island. No previous experience is necessary, and on successful completion of the course you should be able to handle a powerboat safely in familiar waters by day and will be issued with the certificate for planing craft with a coastal endorsement.
The course is taught on our 4.8m Ribcraft RIB, which has a steering console, but we may also use an Orkney dory with tiller steering
Our courses generally have between two and six participants. They can take place both at weekends and weekdays. Times and dates depend on the tide times.
