Race Report June 22nd 2025
Unfortunately we were just too late for the heatwave, and although the sea was
relatively flat, there was a strong head wind on the return leg, which meant rather
slower times than usual.
We were missing quite a few of the usual Scottish paddlers as we clashed with
another event, but there was a strong teams of paddlers from Tynemouth and Blyth
Clubs.
There were 24 entries – 3 SKIs and 21 SeaKayaks of which 5 were female. Half of
the racers were in the age 55 to 65 age group (Grand old men and women). The
oldest paddler (in the Ancient Mariner Class, age 76) was Malcolm Thoms – who
came in 10th position – the next oldest (Old man of the Sea) was Gilbert Speirs,
paddling a SKI, who was the fastest boat round the course! Considering that last
year’s event was won by a Junior, just goes to show that it is a race for everyone.
We did not realise it, but we had the current European marathon champ (over 70’s),
in our midst: Gilbert was just back from racing in Portugal at the European Marathon
Champs. He won the over-70 class by two minutes, in a 12 mile race. 83 minutes of
paddling. Our congratulations go to him.
Fastest SKI: 48 mins. 50 sec, Gilbert Speirs in a Carbonology Vault.
Fastest Seakayak: 58 mins 15 mins, Duncan Craig in a Northshore Calypso
Thanks to all the helpers.
We are planning to be running the race next year on June 21st, hope to see you all
there.
